Spring Cleaning Your Carpets – What You Need to Know

It’s that exciting time of year; Spring is in full bloom, the weather is warming and Summer is just around the corner! The time of year when you are thinking about Spring cleaning and removing the dirt that all those winter boots tracked into your home, and onto your carpet!

Here are a few simple tips on how to get rid of the dirt and keep your carpet looking clean and fresh for years to come:

  • Vacuuming on a regular basis is the most important step in maintaining your carpet. Proper vacuuming helps to remove the dirt particles that will otherwise, when walked on, work their way down below the surface where they can cause damage to the carpet fibres.
  • Reduce your carpet’s exposure to direct sunlight by using blinds, shades or awnings. UV rays may cause fading and/or discoloration of your carpet.
  • Many carpets are treated with special finishes to resist soil and stains; however, no carpet is stain-proof. Stain-resistant finishes such as STAINMASTER®, R2X™ Stain and Soil Repellent System and Anso® will hold the spill on the carpet surface allowing some time for the liquid to be cleaned up. Use spot removal techniques before the spill has a chance to penetrate the fibres. The longer a spill is left unattended, the more difficult it will be to remove.
  • Before you use any carpet cleaning product, pre-test a small, inconspicuous area to ensure that the solution will not damage the carpet or its dyes. With a clean, white, absorbent cloth or paper towel gently work in the cleaning agent from the edges of the spot to the centre. Blot thoroughly, and repeat until the spot no longer transfers to the cleaning cloth. Use clean water to remove any remaining cleaning agent, and absorb remaining moisture with paper towels. When completely dry, brush or vacuum the pile to restore its texture.
  • Use floor protectors that are designed for carpet that evenly distribute the weight of tables, chairs and other furniture. Also, you should not have chairs or other pieces of furniture with rollers or castors directly on the floor without appropriate protection.
  • Heavy furniture should be moved occasionally to avoid pile crushing.

We recommend having your carpet professionally cleaned regularly every 12-18 months to remove the residues that vacuums don’t remove. Left unchecked, these soils resulting from cooking vapors, air pollution and tracked-in dirt will begin to attract and hold the dry soil causing gradual but substantial dulling of colours. Your local Sears Floor Covering Centre can recommend a professional carpet cleaner in your area that has the experience, knowledge and equipment that will help to keep your carpet’s appearance fresh and help extend its lifespan.

Floor and Décor Trends 2011

Have you decided that it’s time to give your home décor a fresh new look and don’t know where to start? Take a look at the latest floor décor colour trends. Since the floor is the largest surface in the room, designers will tell you to start at the floor and work your decor choices up from there.

Are you looking of something fresh and new in your life? Some pizzazz in your surroundings? Your choice of colour, texture and pattern on the floor will set the foundation for style for the entire space. The floor décor options available today are endless!

For the longest time, we have been living in a very neutral, safe-coloured world. And we are all ready for a change! Home décor colour trends for 2011 are all about combining harmonious neutrals with just the right amount of accent colours or brights. Inspired by cautious economic optimism and cultural influences from around the globe, flooring designers have incorporated new colours and wonderful colour combinations into every flooring category from carpet to resilient, laminate to wood, and ceramic to stone.

Top designer floor décor colour picks for 2011:

  1. Grey, the go-to foundation colour. The latest version: warm, deep, smoky grey that combines equally well with deep colours or brights… or sophisticated shades like silver, nickel and pewter that work well with glass, steel and cement architecture.
  2. Natural Browns, the full-spectrum from soft and light to rich earth, coffee and chocolate tones. What is new: combine the shades for a tonal composition or pair the browns with nature-sourced accent colours, like robin’s egg blue, lilac, or rose.
  3. The “New Beige” Neutrals, from shades of white with a hint of colour, to off-white to wheat, flax, blonde, camel or taupe. The fresh range of “neutrals” in floor colours today have been designed to coordinate carpet, tile, stone and wood for a smooth transition from space to space.
  4. The Black Story. Rich black, graphite and charcoal bring exciting new options and influences to flooring colour and finish.
  5. Some Favourite Décor Accent Colours: plum, teal, chartreuse, ochre, reddish purples, eggplant, blood orange, tangerine, sunny yellow, robin’s egg blue, rose, lavender.

The inspirations are infectious! Use your imagination, check out the latest floor décor possibilities and create a space that is uniquely yours.

Quick Fixes for Your Laminate Floors!

Stuff happens! You have recently had a new laminate floor installed in your kitchen, and you love the way it looks. It’s morning. You wear your wooly slippers to avoid footprints. You cringe when your dog charges in as you pour food into his bowl, even though you know the floor can stand up to his nails – it’s one of the main reasons you chose laminate, after all! You pull your favourite oversized mug out of the cupboard for your morning coffee and whoops!, it falls to the floor, leaving a little dent.

No need to panic, we’ve got an easy fix for you!

What you’ll need:

  •  a normal wax crayon that closely matches the colour of your floor

What to do:

  • Remove the paper off the crayon
  • Shave it down and place in a microwavable dish
  • Melt the crayon shavings down until they can be molded into a putty-like substance
  • Use the putty to fill in the dent!

You continue making coffee while getting ready to start your day, knowing you can take on anything that may come your way!
